If I wanted to buy...

... half a dozen cheap cotton dressing gowns...

... a super-king bed with a non-solid wooden headboard and a mattress-level or non-existent footboard, that wasn't the £750-excluding-mattress one from John Lewis or the one in the manky orangey colour from Ikea*, and I wanted to actually see it in a shop...

* Yes, I know, but it's only the fitted sheet and I tend to just have plain ones of those that tone with the rest of the bedding, so I don't think it'd be a problem.

... the time and equipment of some people to move the contents of the flat into the new house...

... a non-gas BBQ with two sections (so that we can just use one if it's just us, or use one for veggie stuff if there are more people) that doesn't appear to be made of tin foil (like this one seems to be...

... where would you suggest that I look?

Also, if anyone has strong views about the relative comfort levels of the Ikea HAGALUND and LYCKSELE sofabeds for sleeping purposes, or the general quality of Indesit freezers, do let me know, hmm?

Why, yes, we have been looking at things for the house over the last few days!

I have a LYCKSELE, it is a great bed and a not very comfy sofa (which follows my usual rule - if a sofabed is a good sofa, it will be a lousy bed and visa versa).
It's also an excellent cat scratching post...

It's almost certainly going to get more use as a bed than as a sofa, and you're going to be sleeping on it at least sometimes, so that vote gets double points!

For beds, try Warren Evans. They have multiple showrooms in London plus you can also buy online these days, I believe. We bought ours 10 years ago and the mattress is still really good and the frame is rock-solid. If you keep an eye out they seem to put various models on sale periodically.

Ouch, pricey though! For that price, I'll probably just get the John Lewis one!

FWIW, JL and Warren Evans are the top two ranked bed vendors for customer satisfaction by "Which?", IIRC.

I suspect we're going to end up with the JL one. We have a JL one atm, and it's done very well (and will hopefully continue to do so in the spare room).

Amazon?
Muji?

Oh, Muji. Good idea, but Mike's just read over my shoulder and said "They're £39 each", so maybe not. (That did make us think of Uniqulo, but they don't have any.) Amazon have lots of frilly little things and lots of ones that cost more than I'd really like to pay, and not much in between. I might have to try a street market, or something.

I just want the kind of thing that you have in your spare room, and for exactly the same purpose.

You have discovered my cunning plan.

I think Warren Evans might have the sort of thing you are looking for in a bed. They've a few London showrooms: http://www.warrenevans.com/

I've just bought a barbeque and can confirm that the B&Q and Homebase ranges are just as flimsy as that ASDA one. We decided to go cheaper in the end and bought a £25 one without the double grill (but with the same idea that we'd just use one side when its just the two of us) and got a disposable one for the veggies. Might upgrade to a Weber in a couple of years if we make enough use of it.

Dressing gowns - not 100% cotton but is this the sort of thing? http://www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_151010615380_-1

Warren Evans is more than I was thinking of spending: if we're going to pay that much, I'll get the John Lewis one and get the matching furniture, tbh! There seem to be loads of decent quality wooden kings, but no superkings. Very annoying.

I suppose most people just want a BBQ that will last a couple of years, so it doesn't matter if they fall apart. I'd quite like to get one that will last a bit longer, so we'll have a look at Weber, thanks!

I spotted those a few days ago, and they only had them in size 8-10 or 20-22! I think I'll keep an eye on eBay, yes.

I'll ask my friend Sue about BBQ recommendations, her husband has had about 6 in the time I have known him!

Primark? Cheap dressing gowns? Seems likely.

[identity profile] flickgc.livejournal.com 2013-05-29 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not a bad idea. It's not somewhere I ever think to go into, I'll have a look and see if there's one I'll be near. Ta!

[identity profile] despotliz.livejournal.com 2013-05-29 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on how cheap is cheap, but for basic dressing gowns BHS is a good bet. Or M&S next time they do a 20% off. Cheaper than that is probably Primark or ebay.

[identity profile] flickgc.livejournal.com 2013-05-29 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking cheaper than that, tbh. I may have unrealistic expectations, but I'm sure I should be able to get a cheap one for less than a tenner! I'll give Primark a go next time I'm near one, ta!
