I know that lots of people don't give a toss about protecting their personal information, but really, is it that much of a leap that people might be annoyed that you have given their data to a third party in order to have that third party ask if they mind their data being given to a fourth party...?

No, people really have no idea what they're dealing with...mostly because it's not them.

That said, I occasionally point out to some of my more flippant colleagues that, due to the nature of our ever-loving employers, that we are also the customer. Even then, the dawning realisation doesn't happen very often.

You're talking about two *different* types of third party. One is an agent of the people who control the personal information and is not a data-controller, the other is another data controller. Bit like your bank sending a letter via the Post Office to ask if they can pass your details to, say, a wine merchant that they've partnered with. So nothing controversial at all, all perfectly legal and well within European Data Protection good practice guidelines.

All you need is a decent email client and SMTP and you can do it yourself. It's only a few thousand people after all.

By that logic, the Royal Mail keeps details of the name, address and subject of each letter sent. It doesn't.

I believe that it boils down to not wanting to be blacklisted for sending too many messages too quickly, and not having planned enough ahead to be able to slowly increase the volume of traffic and avoid that.

If you don't want email servers to keep a copy of your email address (and probably a copy of the email as well) you pretty much need to not use email. That's just one of the side effects of how the system works. All perfectly reasonable.
