I know that lots of people don't give a toss about protecting their personal information, but really, is it that much of a leap that people might be annoyed that you have given their data to a third party in order to have that third party ask if they mind their data being given to a fourth party...?

Sigh.

No, people really have no idea what they're dealing with...mostly because it's not them.

That said, I occasionally point out to some of my more flippant colleagues that, due to the nature of our ever-loving employers, that we are also the customer. Even then, the dawning realisation doesn't happen very often.
