I've been very bad about updating lately: sorry. A combination of being busy but not (visitors aside) actually doing anythign terribly interesting. Here, have some waffle about gardening, animals and sewing to make up for it!
In the garden, everything to be planted out has been (other than: some aubergines, which I'm keeping in until they're a bit bigger / the nights are a bit warmer, yes I do mean you 3C last night; some white honesty* plug plants, which I've only had for a couple of weeks and could do with a bit more growth as well; and some french beans that I planted a couple of weeks ago in a panic when we had horrible winds the day after I planted the beans out and they got thoroughly battered so that I thought they wouldn't make it. Oh, and I might start some more cucamelons, too: one pot-of-three is thriving, the other is at least half dead, no idea. Oh, and the stuff I bought at the garden centre this morning, but that's just to do a couple of little tubs for on the table and so Doesn't Count, right?). It turns out that 500+ bedding plants is not actually vastly more than we needed (especially as there's a big bed that I want to keep on annuals until the weeds are more under control), although we could have done with more of them being shade-happy.
* I bought a pack of biennial honesty seeds last year, planted a few of them in the conservatory and then planted them outside in the autumn and forgot about them. This spring, One Of The Things I Planted Out Last Autumn** shot up and produced masses of pretty purple flowers. "I wonder what it is," I mused, as I searched in vain through the seed packets for something with a similar photo, before realising that the honesty packet had a picture of the seeds, not the flowers.... Anyway, it's done really well, so I've started some more off for planting out this autumn, bought some white plug plants and also bought some slightly larger perennial plants, which have already gone outside. I fully expect to be overrun with honesty in a couple of years. ** I now have a book and Write These Things Down. I do wonder what the alliums are that I also appear to have planted around the same time, but I think they're going to be very pretty when they come fully out!
The orchard is coming along nicely, too: plenty of leaves and flowers. The peach on the patio is a bit sad, though: not sure what's happening there, but most of the branches have no leaves. The fedge is leafing up nicely, too, and this year we have wysteria flowers (hurrah! we got the pruning right!).
The boys are all doing nicely. GB's been pleasingly healthy, although I would be happier if he actually finished his dinner (and medication) rather than leaving some of it in the bucket each day. Bugs is filling out nicely, and is generally much fitter than he was, and Baby is, well, Baby. He's also (as of yesterday) up for sale, though I doubt any of you would be interested! One enquiry so far, and a possible from a friend of a friend.
Jo and the ducks are all doing well, although she's starting to get a bit hot on walks now.
C and A came to stay, which was lovely. We tried a new restaurant, The Ambrette, which is sort of Indian-inspired posh food, and thus continues the local practice of restaurants randomly having French names (there's a Mexican, an Italian, a Spanish/North African...). Very tasty, and possibly even nicer than Deeson's (English).
I've started work on what I very much hope (having bought the fabric) won't be an insanely over-complicated quilt project that will cause me to despair and give up. So far, it's going well, so fingers crossed. |
