On account of how he's been very spooky in the outdoor school lately, I thought I'd better get GB's eyes tested.
An eye test is about £45, but the vets also offer a full health check for geriatric horses, which is £60 and includes an eye test, so I thought I might as well go for it.
(Naturally, once I'd booked it the spookiness began to die down, and he was almost normal on Sunday although admittedly he had a couple of other horses there to keep him company and be obviously not terrified of all the invisible scary things that have lately appeared.)
The vet was very pleased with him, given his age and history. Heart and lungs sound great, feet are lovely, given a big enough smack he trotted up nicely in the snow and she was happy with his movement, and she was happy with his food and stable and so on. She didn't bother to look at his teeth, as she knows his dentist, and she took a poo sample for another worm check, which I'm pretty sure will be clear given everything he's been treated with lately.
As it was what I was worried about, the eye test was the biggest part of the examination. He's got a small scar on one retina, but it's been there for years and will just cause a tiny black spot in his vision. He's also got some patches of changing pigment and the start of cataracts in both eyes, worse in the left one, both age-related: she said that they wouldn't actually cause him any trouble for at least ten years so, ahem, it wasn't really worth worrying about.
Her suggestion was that, if there was anything I was actually worried about then I have another of these checks each year but that, if I wasn't, an update eye-test is just £25 and I should have it at the same time as he has his 'flu jab, which seems sensible.
So, good to hear that he's got a clean bill of health!
(I decided not to ride, given the weather, so he got a day off, too: I'm sure he's pleased.) |
