Winter pasture

This morning, we took the boys out for a short hack, and met several pheasants. Bugs is still very much not keen, but on the plus side he didn't actually try to spin around and flee today. Then again, he wasn't in front, so not sure if it's real progress or not. Jo was very helpfully running on ahead and flushing them before the boys got too close, but she didn't manage to catch any of today.

(I'm half-seriously wondering about getting a recording of 'pissed off pheasant taking off from inside a bush' and playing it at him in his stable.)

After we'd done that, we put them in the summer pasture and took down the electric fence there, brought it back down the hill and set it up again in our field. We've just come in from moving the boys back down so that they can have a few hours here before they come in for the evening. They were very unimpressed to be coming in so early, until they got out there and saw All That Grass. Our field's looking really well for having had almost three months to rest.

It's been soggy lately, so Jo hadn't had a good brush for a while and she was a bit of a mess. Mike gave her a good brush this morning, ready for her trip to the vet tomorrow, so inevitably she acquired a load of small burrs on the hack, waded into and lay down in a big muddy puddle on the way back, and rolled in badger poo while we were taking the fence down. Sigh. I guess she'll be having another brush later: at least she's dry!

(She's going to have her teeth cleaned tomorrow. I suspect that in practice they could just give her a sedative shot and have me hold her still, but policy is to knock them out to have it done. As Mike's back into London for the day, I shall be really All Alone for the day.)

Earlier, I opened the back door, about to go outside and do some spraypainting, and saw that the lawn was full of little wee birds, eating seeds off dandelions: gold finches!

They stayed for a bit and then all flew off, so I grabbed a bird feeder from the front garden, put some niger seeds in it and hung it in the back garden.

(We bought the seeds, hopefully, when we first moved in but we've never seen a trace of a goldfinch before and didn't bother to put any out last winter.)

Fingers crossed they'll be back and find it!

It's chilly out there. I wouldn't be surprised if we get a frost.
