Failing to garden

Yesterday, a gardening chap came to have a look at the patch where I want the orchard to be:

He proposes getting his mate in with a digger to pull the surface soil up, which will both level it and help to slow down the regrowth of the weeds. Then we just need to pick the trees and pop them in!

After that, on the way back to his car, he walked through our front garden. "That needs pruning. That branch is dead. You should pull those suckers up before they get bigger. That needs pruning. You should chop that right back...." Yes, possibly we do need to get out in the garden. We've not been very good at doing so, and having someone else poking around in it made me realise just how many weeds and dead bits of plant there are.

Not today, though. Today has been, as are most days, about riding the horses and walking the dog. It's a lovely warm day for the time of year: we even took the boys rugs off for a couple of hours, so that they could get thoroughly muddy feel the sun on their backs, and just now I've been sitting watching the birds on the front patio. Every so often, a female blackbird comes and chases away all the smaller birds, but the rest of the time there's a mass of tits and finches darting around the feeder. I dare say that there are more on the other feeders, but I can't see them from here!

In fact, it looks like I'd better get out there and fill them up, before we bring the boys in from the field and then take the pooch off to have her stitches taken out.

I haven't even heard this week's R4 serial, having been in the field during the morning playing*. I haven't heard a trail, either.

But I did hear someone say that it was the return of Mr Peyps, so I've spent the entire bloody day earwormed by what google tells me is "To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time" by Robert Herrick. Bah!

* (but I will be listening in a little while, as I do like it!)
