flick: (Jodie - snuggles)

Hmm

(Has anyone else noticed that the font on LJ has randomly shrunk? I thought I'd zoomed the page, but I opened another and it was the same. Not sure if they've finally broken the old styles system or if something else is going on. Maybe it's the KGB, or something. Edit: Ok, maybe I had accidentally zoomed it. I zoomed it back, and it seems to be persisting across different pages. Peculiar!)

So, back in the mists of time we were looking to adopt two dogs, and we went to the local animal rescue place. I even did a post about it. We ended up with one dog, because the other had already been adopted, which we felt was a real shame.

About an hour ago, we got a phone call from the rescue place. You can see where this is going, can't you?

Lucy-the-Belgian-Shepherd's new owner had had a stroke a few weeks ago. She'd thought that she'd be able to cope, but in the end she couldn't, so Lucy is back at the rescue.

We went along to see her, and took Jodie with us so that they could have a loving and happy reunion.

Jodie showed about as much interest as she does in the proper dogs next door (ie, not very much), although admittedly more than she shows in the rats (long suffering sigh, lies down at the other end of the garden where they can't bother her and waits for us to put them away). Lucy seemed moderately interested to see her, but more interested in jumping up on us. We took them both for a walk, and Lucy pulls horribly and pushed Jodie out of the way when Jo found an interesting smell in the hedge. She's also rather overweight (too much so for it to just be that she's not been walked for the last couple of weeks), but that would be very fixable, and a year and a half older than Jodie (so, presumably, was there first and was top dog, which would presumably lead to interesting dynamics as Jodie decided whether or not to accept going back to that or to fight for her claim on me).

Also, she is patently not a Belgian Shepherd. I have no idea what she *is*, but she looks mostly like a fat, elderly black lab with a rather long face:

(Not a great pic, it was pissing down and she wasn't standing still for Mike to snap, but she really is not a pretty dog.)

The lady who had her was a district nurse (which makes me wonder if the lost nurse we rescued from our road the other day was her stand in), who took Lucy visiting the patients, lived in a small house with small garden, and had to walk Lucy in a harness as she pulled too much.

I can't understand why anyone would look at the two of them and take Lucy rather than Jodie. She's maybe an inch shorter at the shoulder, and a bit less solidly built, but not enough to really matter.

My cynical side wonders if this is Lucy at all, or if they're just trying to palm a random large dog off on us....

We said we'd sleep on it and let them know tomorrow. If we do take Lucy, we'll have to postpone Jodie's op, but that's not a major issue. I'm just a bit dubious about taking her. Thoughts?

You've given several reasons for not taking her, and the only reason you've given for taking her is that several months ago, before you had Jodie, you thought it was a good idea. Based just on this post, I'd advise not.
