Fascinating facts!

To make up for the fact that today has been rather grey and dull, other than tasty last-minute dinner in a nice local pub, here is an interesting pair of facts, from a Speccie review of two books about WWI.

Firstly, that a Lord objected to the introduction of Daylight Savings on the grounds that a woman giving birth to twins might generate a confusion in the succession if the second-born was older than the first.

Second, that there was a town (Bridport) whose rope-making tradition was so important, particularly for making horse-related stuff, that the women were exempted from the land army. Unfortunately, German submarines disrupted hemp supplies, so the had to switch to manila. Which the horses found delicious....

Oh, right, yes, photo:

That's our house, that is. In the drizzle.

(Actually, I took this on the way back from a lovely hack. Mike had gone all "oh, your horse is so slow and old, please let me go out on my own to experience the thundering power and vast speeds of my horse," so I did. And had a much longer ride on account of how my horse doesn't have a hissy fit and turn back after five minutes.

But then, if Mike had come with me he would also have had trouble: there was a small tree mostly down over the path I took, and I felt it scrape over my back as GB went under it. And the Baby's taller....)

The Baby really does have a mind of his own, as to where and when he goes places, glad that's true of Mike, not just me.

In other news, Max just farted... eww...

The Baby doesn't dare have a mind of his own when I'm on him.... I just hope that what Mike vaguely described as a terrifying piece of agricultural machinery is still there when I next take him out on his own, as I don't want him to get bad habits.

(At least you don't have Happy Dog Breath to deal with!)

Great situation for the house. Trees with one view and fields with the other.

And full marks to Lord Whoever for his excellent argument against Daylight Saving.

And trees at the top of both of the valley sides, too! Lots of trees. It's lovely, particularly when it's not raining.

Yes, a very nice spot. I don't envy you keeping the ivy on the house in check though!

Never mind the ivy, there's a wisteria on the front of the house....

Heh. Getting there...

And we need to do something about the house-high leylandii tree in the garden, too.

Yes, it looks kinda wrong, somehow. A bit of a foreigner, and probably spoils the view from the house. An excellent excuse to buy a chainsaw!

The problem with ivy is its leaves are a magnet for dust and pollen and such, making them very unpleasant to work with. Wisteria doesn't have that problem - though ants seem to like living in their branches. (In your hemisphere of course, things might be different.)
