An incidental note

For the last decade+, I've been wearing my Omar's wedding ring. It was always a bit big, so I wore it on my index finger. Even then, it was always a little big, even when I was a size 18 and it was summer.

I meant to get it looked at by a jeweller: the inside of the band is getting worryingly thin, and I thought that if I could just get someone to put another layer of gold onto it then it would both strengthen it and make it smaller. But it's surprisingly hard to find an actual jeweller in London, if you're idle. So.

I'm a size 10, at the moment, and it's winter.

I lost it a few days ago, whilst sitting on the sofa: I went to push my hair back, it got a bit tangled in my hair, then it wasn't there. The next morning, I recruited Mike and we found it, caught up in a pair of his underpants on the drying rack behind the sofa. (Typical Omar!)

I decided that that was enough, as I really don't want to drop it, say, in a muddy field. It's in my jewellery drawer, now, until such time as I actually find the mythical jeweller.

It's only since taking it off that I've realised that I habitually (I'm doing it even now, while actively typing, never mind when my hands are at rest) hold the thumb of that hand up against the index finger, to stop the ring falling off. I wonder how long that habit will take to break? Will it be more or less time than it takes me to get around to finding an jeweller...?

Not London but for what it's worth, we can recommend Ortwin Thyssen in Canterbury :)

This is the trouble: there's a much higher proportion of lovely little useful jewellers outside London. It may have to wait until we move....

It has a mind of its own and wants to slip off, even though you find it very precious?

Wear it on a chain?

This is the other option, but, while I used to wear stuff on neck chains, I haven't for a long time and fear it would get in the way, or that the chain would get snapped due to horse-related evil.

I co-incidentally met a very lovely jeweller in a cafe near East India DLR, while he was on a ramble. He works out of Soho, and if I'd had the cash at the time to reset some sentimental dark sapphire jewellery I was given in Thailand I'd have taken it to him. I'll see if I can dig the address up, as I think it's in my moleskine diary from that year.
