flick: (Riding in costume)

Bloody weather

Today was the Big Show. It rained. Pretty much continually. Sometimes it got a bit lighter, but then it got heavier again.

I mostly couldn't see a damn thing, because my glasses were so covered in water. I fear that the hat from my outfit will not recover, as it has wilted rather and the feathers are distinctly bedraggled. At that, I suspect that my outfit, made out of cheap synthetic fabric, will look rather better in the morning than the ones in sumptuous velvets and silks. One lady had a slight wardrobe malfunction (fortunately after the judging!): her satin skirt got so waterlogged that it ripped open the fastenings at the waist and showed off her petticoat....

(Yes, in the end I rode in the outfit hat, rather than my riding hat: I thought that GB seemed reasonably chilled out, and as it happened he had a little buck in the warm-up arena that made me fairly confident about staying on; this was a good thing, as he proceeded to buck for little or no reason throughout the rest of the day, including right in front of the judges at the start of our individual display.)

Speaking of GB, I don't think that he enjoyed it very much: it involved rather more standing around in the rain getting cold and wetter than he would have liked, and then I wouldn't let him charge off in canter to get warmed back up.

It was, however, quite fun. We didn't place, so did at best seventh out of nine (should have been sixteen, but the other people were too sensible to turn up!), but it was interesting to do. And cold, and wet.

Mike took some photos, but only of the earlier part of the day: it was raining so much that he was worried about damaging his camera, so he put it away in the horse box to keep it dry.

Edit: Poor hat....

That's an awesome outfit, and a very sorry-looking hat.

It sounds like you had a certain amount of fun. From your description I'm just glad you didn't end up lying in the mud.

You look lovely, as does GB.

Thank you! We looked worse later in the day. I almost wish Mike had got an 'after' picture!

You do look fabulous though, and GB is a very handsome horse. Shame about the weather - no end in sight either. My bet is that it's going to stay crap until after the olympics. And by then summer will be mostly over anyway.
You could try taking a hair dryer to the hat, if you have one. Or take it to a nearby public loo with a hot air blower to fluff up the feathers again.

Oops, just saw picture of hat. May be more a case of buying another metre of white marabou fluff from a haberdasher's, assuming that the rest of the thing brushes clean.

Sadly, the actual hat is made out of some sort of plasticised papier-mache, and it rather went floppy in the rain. I might be able to re-shape it, but I'm not terribly confident. On the plus side, it probably cost 50p from a fancy dress shop, so I think I should just look for a new one!

Wow! You look awesome! beautiful. :)

Thank you!

Sadly, I think the hat has had it, but I concur with the masses, you both look most splendid.

I fear for the hat....

I even wore lippie! It washed off, mind, but I did put it on!

You look splendid! And what *awesome* powers of weather control!

In theory I'm sorry that we bailed, but in practice it was clearly the right decision. We are lightweights (like the other seven entrants). We went and played badminton in a (warm, dry, empty) sports hall instead.

Oh, god, no: it would have been just as grim for you as it was for Mike and Toni, if not more as they at least had Things To Do and could drape themselves in a waterproof horse blanket!

It was So Fucking Wet. Seriously. I can see why they're planning on cancelling the drought. I honestly couldn't see beyond about ten yards for most of the time in the main arena. I just had to hope that the rider in front knew what she was doing (protip: she didn't. But neither did anyone else, because as well as not being able to see, no one could hear the PA either!).

I suspect that, had you come along, I would have harangued you for Cruel And Unusual treatment of the kids. Certainly, I feel that way about the horse.

At least you didn't come last!

You may have lost a hat, but you've gained an awesome new userpic.

True!
