After a somewhat anxious few weeks of occasional tiny rain showers that weren't even enough to do any good for the plants, there has finally been a long enough stretch of dry weather for our supplier to cut their hay.

I was expecting to get some of it today and some tomorrow, but when we went up to get the first load they said "well, there might not be any left tomorrow...", so we ended up having all three loads today.

This year, as an experiment, we split up: I stayed at home after we'd got the first load, moving it to the barn/spare stable, and Mike went back to the farm to fill up the trailer again. It seemed to work pretty well, although neither of us is sure who got the better end of the deal (moot point anyway, as I can't really lift the bales high enough above my head to fill the trailer to bursting, stupid female upper body strength).

(Generally, people get hay in one of three ways: either they take their own trailer to the field, load it up and take it away from there to their own barn, or they take their own trailer to the barn and take hay away in small amounts through the year, or they have it delivered to them in small amounts through the year, with each group paying a bit more per bale than the one before. We're unusual in having a big enough barn to store all our hay but not having a trailer to move it around in, so we've done a deal where we go to the field and load it into their trailer, which they then bring over to us (about a ten minute drive).)

We also learnt that this year they've made haylage (or Tasty Hay, as GB would have it). We'd anyway been planning to see if we could find someone who would just sell us 20 bales, rather than buying it a few at a time from the shop, so I expect we'll be getting a load of bales of that fairly soon too.

Given that we also had a tonne of bedding delivered this afternoon, which also needed to be moved into the spare stable, we're a bit tired, now.
