After a fair bit of consideration, and comparison of prices, we decided what we were going to do to replace the leylandii hedge that we chopped down in the back garden. There is a stock netting fence there as well, but a) it's fairly ugly and b) half the posts are rotted through, meaning that it would be pretty ineffective at preventing a theoretical* horse invasion of the garden.
This afternoon, then, we 'planted' (for values of planting that involve sticking a conveniently sized bit of metal in the ground to make a hole and then poking one of four different colours of twig into said hole) a fedge, wot is a cross between a fence and a hedge. Apparently, the willow will grow 6' in the first year, after which you chop it down to a more sensible height so that it thickens up. Apparently, if you tie the stems together where they cross, they graft onto each other and make a nice sturdy structure. Apparently, it establishes more quickly if you put a weed barrier under it for the first couple of years. Apparently, we'll be able to pull the old fence down Real Soon Now. Apparently....
