The usual

This morning was horrible: sheets of rain billowing past the house, as we lurked inside and tried to avoid it. I was mostly making a diagram of the shrubs and trees in the front garden, so that we can start to work out a) what they are and b) when to prune them. This was made somewhat easier because we do have a diagram of the bed in front of the house, from when it was landscaped. It's not the *final* diagram, and the handwriting is terrible, but a bit of googling meant that I've got everything in there either definitely or probably identified. The other side of the garden is trickier, but I'm hoping that Mike's mother will be able to tell us what it all is when she visits! I was intrigued to see what several of the things near the house are, the RHS said, good for ground cover under larger trees and shrubs. I hadn't considered putting low shrubs under the big ones, I might have to have a think and see if that will help with my Too Much Soil problem.
When the sun came out, we did likewise. Mike was off to do some shopping, so he dropped us off a few miles away and Jo and I walked back through the woods. The big patch of wild garlic out that way is in fine flower:

The rebuilding of the burnt out barns is still coming on: they're both up, now, but need things like walls and roofs to be added. He's just got his pheasant pens out, too, getting them ready for the autumn.

I got home to find that the post had brought two packages of plants: some tomatillos from eBay (if they work out, next year I'll try and do it from seed. Just didn't think of it in time) and some wild strawberries from dorispossum. |
