Quilty things

I finished a new quilt last week. It was quite fiddly to make:

I'm still not sure about the innermost bit of the central star, but ah well.

At weekend, I went on a workshop organized by Quilt Club, on making wholecloth quilts (the ones that are just a single piece of fabric, with all the design in the quilting), although we aimed smaller and went for cushion covers. I'd never done any hand quilting before, and most of the day was taken up with learning about the design elements, thinking of a design, drawing it out on paper, and transferring it to the fabric.

That's my excuse, anyway:

I'm still undecided about whether I'm actually going to finish it or if I'd rather just take out the bit I've done and do it on the machine!

The star quilt (choice of colours not withstanding...{grin!}) is very impressive - I can only imagine how fiddley it was.

I've admired (in an I-would-never-have-the-patience way)some gorgeous wholecloth quilts at Alexander Palace and Earls Court knitting and stitching shows. I think they're so impressive because of the intricacy of the design over such large areas.

That star quilt is very cool. I like the way you maximize the combination of fabric pattern and piece size.

There's something to be said for working small pieces by hand. Sure it's slower, but the different pace makes for a different kind of understanding of the work. (Hmm, not sure that says what I mean, but maybe it makes sense to you? Argh.)

Quilt looks awesome!!! Am so impressed, bother in and of itself and because quilting is definitely not one of my skillsets.

I've been wondering what the star quilt reminded me off. I first thought perhaps it was a Mason's symbol, but apparently not. And then I thought St John Ambulance, (which I see you lot also have), but not quite either. I now suspect something similar is on the floor of a building I've known in the past, but I can't think where. I like it anyway, including the colours in the photo, even if they're not true to life!
