Misc

Beautiful view of the milky way tonight. There are compensations for the seasons changing so that the late-evening pony check and feed is in the dark!

This afternoon, I planted some bulbs (Chionodoxa Luciliae, in the lawn near the sundial, and Grape Hyacinths, under the kitchen window). Part of the process involved ripping out a couple of big clumps of Lady's Mantle, which I seem to have been doing quite a bit of lately: it's very pretty, but it's a terrible thug and self-seeds like a bastard. I'm sure that I didn't get all of it out, but I'm fairly relaxed about that: a small amount is nice, and I'll know to keep it on a shot rein next year. After I'd pulled it up, I was bemused to see that the now-bare soil was strewn with tiny bulbs, even where I hadn't been digging. I think that they must be the snowdrops that I put there last spring when I split some of the bigger clumps from elsewhere, but I'd planted those fairly deep so migrating up to the surface was a mystery: I've replanted them at an appropriate depth, and we'll see what happens.
