(We went up to see her today, to do the paperwork -- because I don't quite trust them not to accidentally give her to someone else -- and give her an old towel for her bed, which we can later move to her new bed so that it smells familiar. Oh, and to take her for a little walk down the lane and give her some fuss!)

She's three or four, which I fear is half of her expected life-span. We are planning on changing her hame, but only from Jody to Jodie, which we feel is unlikely to cause her serious confusion.

Oh, and Flick, though she is a 'giant' breed she is not, in herself, a particularly large example. The bigger the shorter in terms of lifespan in dogs, so I think you can be a little more optimistic.

I wonder if they've been a bit bred for size in the US and UK? She's from France, so that may have something to do with it.

That's even more reassuring, then: the UK/UK life expectancy was about 10-11 years until the last decade or so, when it dropped off sharply. Hopefully, she'll be under-bred enough to manage the old allotment of years!
