Bad websites...

So, in the spirit of Getting On With It, I've signed up to do online booking at the nicer-sounding local leisure centre.

First, I was presented with:

Yes, only *men* can have the rank of Captain!

Then I got to the bit of the form that looked as though it was going to do a postcode lookup but didn't, and then I got terribly confused about why I would be entering my mobile number via a dropdown box labelled "select site"....

Then, oh joy, they sent me an email to confirm that I have signed up. My username, I am solemnly informed, is 110085[XX]. They have provided me with a temporary PIN to use with it, but recommend that I change it to something more memorable when I have logged in.

(Hmm... "Yogilates". That sounds good for me. I wonder why it doesn't appear in the "Yoga and Pilates" section of the booking site...?

It's also bad programming (violates one of the Normal Forms or whatever) to make a field do two things, which is what this does by trying to make the title field provide M or F as well. (one of my recent favourites similar to this was a dropdown having "Dr - male" and "Dr - female". If they need to know whether someone's male or female (and they may not need to) they can put in a separate field. The classic is or was apparently British Airways who trawled for every possible title a person could have including Papess probably. Not sure if they allowed for No Title.

Not just 'Captain - M' but also 'Colonel - M' - clearly they do not believe in female military personnel - or anyone over the rank of Captain.

I have just had to abandon the attempt to send a gift to my sister's new-built house via an Amazon order because their online postcode checker doesn't recognise the address (I could send it to one of her neighbours - which would be a bit pointless).

They would be using a standard post code database provided by the Post Office. Unfortunately these aren't updated frequently enough and sites also often use out of date versions too: to save costs I suspect, as the PO charge quite a lot.

Indeed, my previous employers offices weren't findable on Google Maps for about three years after they moved in.

I have yet to find anything reliable on Google maps (it took me three hours of circling an industrial estate before I finally found the 19C cottage I was looking for - two miles away.)
