Silly bugger

We decided not to ride this morning, given the weather forecast: in retrospect, we could have done but wouldn't have been very heavy if the sudden, heavy hail shower (with added thunder) had been half an hour earlier than it actually was.

Instead, we've just taken the boys in the school this afternoon. I rode GB and Mike opted to just lunge Bugs: Bugs had a series of lovely long rolls in the stableyard in the morning (too wet to put them in the field), and was still caked in wet mud, so not having to groom him was a good plan.

Mike decided to try his first (deliberate) canter on the lunge, and recovered it nicely after a rather quick start. Later, Bugs decided that he'd enjoyed that and was going to do it again without being asked. Unfortunately, it was just as we rode past, and just after GB had said "another run now?" and been told "no, wait," so off we went as well (fortunately, very sedately and only for a few steps, so Mike managed to get Bugs calmed down quickly).

And then, for reasons best known to himself, GB decided that he *did* want a run, and I was just being *mean*, so he'd do his patented but lately much neglected spinning on the spot and fucking off trick. Once upon a time, it was an impressive and hospital-inducing trick, but I'm afraid he's not as fast as he once was, and I'm a better rider, and in the end he got about three quarters of the way around before I stopped him and we carried on. At which point it became apparent that he'd hurt his bad leg in the process. And so, for once, the subject line does not refer to Bugs.

(I'm sure he'll be fine in the morning. At least, I hope he will.)

In other news, although we've seen two or three bluebells with one of the flowers open and the rest still screwed up tight, this is the first actually properly out one we've spotted this year:
